The European Parliament today adopted a resolution calling for the successful introduction of digital television in Europe. Parliament requests the European Council to adopt as soon as possible and, at the latest, by the end of this year, an EU action plan. The resolution calls on the Commission to present a clear timetable for the steps it intends to take. Parliament is convinced that digital broadcasting is an essential tool to guarantee access of all European citizens to the services of the information society.
Parliament urges the Member States and the Commission to outline the measures they intend to take in order to encourage the use of an open interoperable European standard for digital television. The resolution follows on from a Question on Multimedia Home Platform (MHP) by Michel ROCARD (PES, F), Chair of the Committee on Culture, Education, Media and Sport.
