As with previous versions of the MHP specification, MHP 1.2 relies on the use of appropriate DVB specifications for digital video broadcast and associated interactive services, applicable to all DVB defined transmission networks such as satellite, cable, terrestrial, microwave. Building on this, MHP 1.2 adds support for the delivery of DVB services over broadband IP networks. It identifies which existing MHP APIs need to interface to broadband IP networks. Where necessary, new APIs are defined to exploit or access the features of broadband IP networks and the protocols for delivery of DVB services of those networks defined in TS 102 034 "Transport of MPEG-2 TS Based Services over IP Based Network".
Since the current business models for delivery of DVB services via broadband IP networks are more operator controlled than was assumed for the original MHP, the present document extends MHP with support for operator supplied applications which run all the time that the MHP environment is running. There is also the possibility that where an operator has subsidised the MHP terminal, applications from that operator may have special privileges not available to
normal applications.
The specification is firstly intended for implementers of MHP terminals on various hardware and software platforms. Secondly it is intended for developers of applications that use the MHP functionality and APIs.
The MHP specification aims to ensure interoperability between MHP applications and different MHP implementations.
