A Situation Report on MHP in Norway

The digital terrestrial TV network in Norway, based on the DVB-T standard and using advanced video (H.264) and audio (AAC+) coding, was officially launched on September 1st 2007. Consumers with suitably equipped receivers will also be able to access MHP applications, with NRK's extended Digital Text TV services the first to become available this autumn. (NRK is the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation.) The main commercial broadcaster, TV2, is also considering the introduction of MHP-based services. The Norwegian "Digital TV Forum" includes a working group dedicated to supporting the implementation of MHP in Norway, with NRK seen as the main driving force behind the efforts.

The first receivers for the Norwegian market are now available, with two models from Grundig and one from Sagem. One of the Grundig models includes MHP and other MHP enabled receivers will become available in the coming months. The first MHP receivers on the Norwegian market include MHP 1.1.2.

NRKs digital text TV service contains same categories as classical teletext, but with extended depth in the articles. In addition it includes a quarter screen with video of any of the channels  in the NRK bouquet. It also offers access to any radio channel from the NRK bouquet and an extended weather service, including a weather chart and weather forecast. The service is reported to be very fast with all content displaying instantly. The service has been optimised for speed and usability.

There are currently no plans to extend MHP services to the satellite and cable markets, although NRK has been trialling a news application on satellite since 2004. It is thought that MHP capabilities may be introduced by the main operators, Get and Canal Digital, with the next generation of receivers with built-in PVR.
