MHP services have been available from public broadcaster YLE since the
DVB-T launch in 2001. These services have been availble on the DVB-T
network and passed through to most of the cable networks as well. The
MHP services of YLE, have been available on satellite since the
beginning of 2005.
A group of Finnish cable operators launched a selection of new MHP services in the first half of 2006. This coincided with the commercial availability of the first MHP cable terminal with a broadband IP-based return path. The new services allow the use of a pay-TV card with user authentication for commercial services. Services include EPG, pay-TV, self-care system, a contrywide telephone directory, various information portals, etc.
A broadband IP enabled terrestrial MHP receiver is planned for release in the coming months. There are currently around 50,000 MHP boxes in Finnish homes. This number is expected to grow rapidly now that the broadband-IP enabled MHP products are available.
